Talk : Comprehensive treatments—including acupuncture, acupuncture point injections, and surgical thread embedding combined with dietary therapy—for TCM syndromes that cause obesity.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to improve the treatment of obesity by combining acupuncture with pharmacopuncture and the insertion of absorbable surgical thread into acupuncture points, selected according to the differential diagnosis of energy imbalances.
TCM(Traditional Chinese Medicine) treatment methods for obesity have proven to be effective when they are selected judiciously and are adapted to each individual case according to the diagnosed energy imbalance. They can be associated with classical acupuncture point needle stimulation and other methods, also known as acupuncture point insertion or pharmacopuncture, which is a TCM technique that injects substances such as plant extracts, vitamins or other medicinal solutions into acupuncture points to help with weight loss. It works by regulating appetite, stimulating metabolism and reducing fat accumulation.
According to the specific pathophysiology, TCM associates obesity with six syndromes:
1) Spleen Deficiency with Phlegm and Dampness accumulation
2) Excess Heat in the Stomach with obstructions and Dampness accumulation
3) Yang Deficiency in the Spleen and Kidneys
4) Excess Internal Heat due to Yin Deficiency in the Liver and Kidneys
5) Qi Stagnation and Blood Stasis
6) Phlegm Accumulation
Corroborating recent evidence on the experimental mechanism of acupuncture on obesity from published studies with strict individualization according to the listed energy imbalances, we have created acupuncture point formulas that can be stimulated by pharmacopuncture and resorbable surgical thread insertion. This method aims to amplify the effects of acupuncture as well as prolong the active stimulation of certain acupuncture points.
Dietary therapy, also individualized according to the differentiation of syndromes, completes the therapeutic approach.
