Talk : The Gut–Brain Axis and Mental Health
Abstract
Mental health is often discussed as though it begins and ends in the brain. Yet the brain exists in constant communication with the rest of the body, and the gut is one of its most influential partners.
This presentation explores the microbiota–gut–brain axis, the bidirectional communication network connecting the digestive system and the brain through neural, immune, endocrine, and metabolic pathways. It introduces the science behind this connection, including the role of the vagus nerve, stress hormones, serotonin, microbial metabolites, and the intestinal barrier, while distinguishing established evidence from emerging research.
The discussion then moves beyond biological mechanisms to examine how this communication may appear in everyday life. Stress can alter appetite, digestion, motility, and intestinal sensitivity, while persistent digestive discomfort can contribute to worry, disrupted sleep, social withdrawal, and reduced quality of life. This interaction may create a self-reinforcing cycle in which emotional and digestive symptoms intensify one another.
The presentation also considers how nutrition, sleep, movement, stress regulation, social connection, and appropriate clinical care may support both gut and mental health. Microbiome testing and probiotics are presented within their proper context: potentially valuable when they answer a focused clinical question, but not substitutes for careful assessment or established mental-health treatment.
By combining scientific research with practical and relatable examples, this talk offers a more integrated view of mental wellbeing. It invites us to look beyond isolated symptoms, listen more closely to the body, and place the whole person at the center of care.
