Talk : Can We Bring Humanity Back to Medicine? From Intergenerational Wisdom to AI What we gained, what we lost, and what we might build next
Abstract
Modern healthcare has given us extraordinary advances in diagnostics, specialization, pharmacology and technology. At the same time, many families have become increasingly disconnected from the practical health knowledge, intuition and intergenerational wisdom that once lived within homes and communities.
This presentation explores the evolution of healthcare from family- and community-held knowledge toward increasingly specialized and institutionalized models of medicine, while asking what may have been gained, lost or simply forgotten along the way. It considers the historical movement from vitalistic and nature-based views of the human organism toward more mechanistic models, alongside the emergence of functional, integrative, environmental, energetic and quantum approaches that are again expanding how we think about health.
Rather than proposing one correct healing system, this talk asks whether the future may lie in connecting multiple lenses. What might healthcare look like if conventional medicine, traditional systems, modern science, emotional and generational healing, emerging energy and frequency-based approaches, and the individualās own lived experience could inform one another?
Artificial intelligence introduces both an opportunity and a challenge. Could AI help preserve intergenerational health knowledge, translate between different medical frameworks, identify better questions, connect individuals with appropriate expertise and support personal feedback loops without replacing critical thinking, intuition or human relationship?
Ultimately, this presentation asks whether the next evolution of healthcare could focus less on providing more information and more on developing health literacy: helping individuals and families become more capable participants in their own health while still drawing on the strength of practitioners, community and modern science.
Perhaps the future of medicine is not about returning to the past, but moving forward without forgetting what humans once knew how to do.
Biography
Dr. Michelle van der Westhuizen, MD (MBChB), CCFP, FMCP-M, FAAMFM, is a South African-trained physician living in Canada. She is an educator and researcher whose work has spanned family medicine, functional and environmental medicine, complex neuroimmune illness, family health, and applied quantum biology. Her perspective has also been shaped by her own health journey, which led her to explore health and healing through increasingly broad and interconnected lenses.
Michelle has worked in clinical care, physician education, mentorship and research, with a particular focus on complex chronic and neuroimmune conditions.
Her passion lies in connecting the dots between different approaches to health, building relationships between practitioners across disciplines, and helping create a more collaborative global health community. She is especially interested in bringing people back to their own wisdom and capacity to make informed health decisions, while translating complex scientific and integrative concepts into practical, tangible ideas that families can use in everyday life.
